MISSION STATEMENT
Last December and again in mid-January meetings were held at the Detroit Public Library regarding a social documentary project that would engage Detroit’s community of artists. The working title at that time was Detroit: A City in Peril. After much discussion with a cross section of the creative community of Detroit, we will embark of a project slated for April/May 2010. Detroit Focus in cooperation with the Detroit Public Library will produce a series of exhibitions, lectures, and performances that document the city in a social documentary/social realistic way. Artists of all disciplines will be invited to participate.
The new title of the project, The Detroiters, came about with thoughts in mind regarding the recent anniversary of Robert Frank’s The Americans book. We feel the title is more objective and less pejorative.
Beginning in April we will hold a series of meetings with key representatives of the various communities of artists, writers, poets, photographers, and musicians, to begin planning this wide ranging multi-disciplined project. Much more information will be coming your way in the months ahead.
Thank you for your interest.
